new born fun
Before I was born
 I was part of my mother.
 I was comfortable inside.
 I had a small room but was nice & warm.
 I didn't worry about my food & O2.
The Day : I was thrown outside
 I was squeezed and pushed though the narrow passages.
 I was thrilled by the adventure.
 It was all so dramatic to be out in the world.
 I had expected a better reception.
My first few minutes of arrival
 I was seperated from my mother. (Cord cut)
 I was choking & frothing - suck my mouth quickly
 I was wet - wipe me quickly
 I was freezing - wrape me quickly
 I was dirty - don't worry it protects me
 My first breath was deep & and I liked it.

 It is important because it tells the story of my first few minutes of my life.
 It help in predicting my future.
 Do not forget to record my apgar score

 Scoring done at 1, 5 & 10 minutes
 Score of 7-10 Normal Baby

All these figures tell me how well I did with my mother(in utero)

Medical Examination
 Always done at birth and daily at least once
 Should always be done by a Pediatrician
Bath
 No bath for me for first 48 hrs.
 Prepare things before bathing me like Towel, Soap, Oil, Cotton balls.
 Soap: Any light cleansing/creamy soap can be used. Perfumed soap/lotion may cause allergy
 Oil: Any oil can be applied.
 Kajal: No kajal please.
 Powder: Any baby powder can be used during summer.
My Clothes.
 Give me bath at room temp. of 30 C.
 Bath me in leuke-warm water, in close room.
 Don't apply soap on my face.
 Clean eyes, nose , genitalia with wet cotton balls.
 Should be comfortable, easy to put on, and washable.
 Should be made of material that is soft & comfortable with no hard
 seams or rough stichings
 Buy cotton, towelling or pure wool clothes.
 Clothes which open down the front or have wide necks are the best.
 Avoid lacy shawls, pullovers etc.
 Buy bright colors.
 Avoid clothes which leaves fibres.
 Should allow easy access to the nappy.
Massage
 Massage me only with light hand.
 Vigrous & hard massage can
 break my bones,
 dislocate my joints,
 bleed from my tender skin.
Changing baby's nappy
 Babies dislike being wet or dirty - protest by crying
 Wash baby's bottom with a piece of cotton wool moistened in warm water.
 Wash nappy in hot with soap and rinse thoroughly.
 Triple absorbent nappy fold can be made as follows.

Spots & Rashes
 Milia : White spot on nose & face
 Rubra milia : Red spot on the face & body
 Drying & Peeling of skin - apply oil/vaseline
 Scurfy scalp / Cradle cap - mild form will go away by itself
 sever cases apply 1% cetrimide soap/lotion
 Naevi : Capillary dilatation over eyelid, forehead, back of the neck.
 Other red naevi ( haemangiomas ) are abnormal
 Spider naevi - sometimes seen normally
 Black naevi ( thil ) - Large ones should be removed
 Mongolian spots : Greyish blue pigmentation over buttocks, thigh & legs are normally seen - fad's away by 4-5 yrs of age
 Urticarial rash : Due to allergy
 Seborrhoeic dermatitis.
 Eczema.
 Cafe au lait patches.
 Perianal redness
 Due to the acidic stool
 Napkin rash
 due to maceration of skin due to prolonged contact of wet nappy
 sensitive skin
 secondary infection
 allergy
My Head
 Shape of the skull - moulding disappears after 2-3 days
 Fontanelle - soft diamond shape in centre normally seen
 Caput succedaneum - soft indurated swelling disappears by 2 days
 Cephalhaematoma - soft flucutating swelling disappears by 3 mon.
 Crainotabes - normally seen in premature
My Mouth
 Epstein pearls - 2 white spots on palate
 Tonque tie - rarely seen
 Neonatal teeth - normal
 Snoring / sneezing - normal
My Eyes
Red spot - bleeding on the sub-conjunctiva
 Black mole - Normal
 Blue spot - Normal
 Blue cornea - Normal
Color of the skin
 Bluish color of hand & feet - hypothermia, hypoglycemia
 Yellow color of eyes & skin - Jaundice
 normally seen in all babies
 no treatment required in 80% of cases
 depending on the age, weight, gestation treatment is given
 treatment is simple - phototherapy
Breast
 Enlargement of the breast occurs on 3-4th day.
 No local massage
 No Formentation
 Donot express the milk
 Umbilicus
 Normally dry up and falls by 5 - 10 days.
 Look for any bleeding / red granuloma.
 Donot forment, apply any ghee, cream, etc.
 Clean with spirit or after shave lotion.
 Umbilical hernia.
Genitalia ( Male )
 Non retractable prepuce
 Donot forcibly retract the foreskin
 Clean with plain water
Genitalia ( Female )
 Vaginal bleeding
 ocour in 1/3rd female babies on 3 - 5 days
 Last for 2 - 4 days.
 Vaginal mucous secreation.
 Hymenal tags.
Baby's urine
 Must pass urine within 48 hrs. of age.
Baby's stool
 Must pass stool within 24 hrs. of age.
 Passes black - green - greenish yellow - yellow stool by 5th day.
 Loose stool by 5th day - Transitional stool.
 May pass stool 7 times/day or 1 time in 7 days.
Baby's Sleep
 Baby may sleep 8 - 20 hrs a day.
 Some baby sleep during day time is longer than night.
 Some baby sleep on the stomach well.
Crying Baby
 I cry when
 I am hungry
 I am wet ( urine or stool )
 I am hurt
 I am alone
 I am over clothed & felling hot
 Others
 Feeding
 Feed me as soon as possible preferably at birth
 I like Breast milk only
 Do not adulterate my mother's milk by giving me top feed
 I take milk at my convenience don't force me
 I enjoy mother's warmth while feeding
 If I urinate 5-6 times a day -- THEN I had taken enough milk
 Feed me exclusively breast milk for 4 months
 Only Breast feed the child till 3 months of age.
 Bottles are never required, Avoid them absuletely.
 Water, Honey, Janam guti, Gripe water, etc are not required at all.
 Give chewable food during teething.
 Donot force feed your child.
 Give food along with your own food.
 Home made food is more safe & cheap.
 Donot substitute food during the principal meal hours.
